Prayer To Deal With Hurtful People

Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Luke 6:28

Great grief prays with great earnestness. Prayer is not a collection of balanced phrases; it is the pouring out of the soul. What is love if it be not fiery? What are prayers if the heart be not ablaze? They are the battles of the soul. In them men wrestle with principalities and powers... "The prayer that prevails is not the work of lips and fingertips. It is the cry of a broken heart and the travail of a stricken soul."
Samuel Chadwick

Heavenly Father,
help me deal lovingly with that tough person in my job
but guard me from the hurt that he can also cause.
Amen.

Lance, I've dealt with this more than I can say. I now pray for detachment and to see that person as God might, not as I do. It has worked, but I often take back my prayer! It helps me deal with the rage.

Life experience reveals that difficult and hurtful people are actually some of the wisest teachers. Just when we believe we are tolerant, understanding, loving, compassionate, empathic and open-minded, Higher Forces prsent us with people who humble us. Unconditional love means we are meant to learn to love people despite their imperfections. We can gain insight into perfection within the imperfection. We learn some people have no point of reference for love or compassion. They may never have had anyone treat them with positive energy. People treat others based on what they have been taught. People who hurt others have been wounded themselves and they are silently yearning for new examples of love.

"Bless them that curse you" has to be one of the greatest challenges - especially the variation where instead of "curse" it's "do permanent bodily harm to you" or "kill your loved ones." Unfortunately, that variation gets played out I imagine thousands of times a day around the world; it's one of a number of major obstacles to world peace.

Looks like the link is not working. If you are interested, the book referenced above is by Roxanne K. Livingston, and is available on Amazon.com. The title is Chronically Hurtful People: How to Identify and Deal with the Difficult, Destructive and Disconnected.

"The most important of life's battles is the one we fight daily in the silent chambers of the soul."
